Critical fall height explained: choosing safety surfacing for play equipment

What critical fall height means, why it matters and how it guides the choice of playground safety surfacing.

If you are adding or replacing play equipment, you will come across the term critical fall height. It is one of the most important factors in choosing the right surface underneath.

What is critical fall height?

Critical fall height is the maximum height from which a child could fall on a piece of equipment, such as the top of a climbing frame or a platform. The surface beneath needs to provide enough impact absorption for falls from that height.

Why it matters

The higher the potential fall, the more cushioning is needed. Choosing a surface without considering fall height can leave a play area that looks good but does not offer the right protection.

How artificial grass safety surfacing works

Artificial grass on its own is softer than tarmac, but around play equipment it is laid over shock-absorbing underlays and pads. Different thicknesses suit different fall heights, so each area can be matched to the equipment it surrounds.

What to ask your installer

We match every safety surface to the critical fall height of your equipment and provide the full technical specification, so you have everything you need for inspections.
