From tarmac to play space: how a playground conversion works

A step-by-step look at converting hard school or nursery playgrounds into safer, softer artificial grass play areas.

Many schools and nurseries have large areas of tarmac or concrete that were never designed with play in mind. Converting them into soft, safe play spaces is often simpler than people expect.

1. Survey and design

We visit the site, measure up and talk through how the space is used: playtime, PE, outdoor learning or early years play. Together we plan the layout, including any play equipment, paths and zones.

2. Preparing the ground

Depending on the condition of the existing surface, it can sometimes be prepared and built upon rather than fully excavated. Drainage and levels are checked so the finished surface performs properly.

3. Safety surfacing

Where play equipment is involved, shock-absorbing underlays and pads are chosen to match the critical fall height, with the technical specification provided.

4. Laying and finishing

The artificial grass is laid, joined and finished neatly around edges, paths and equipment, leaving a clean, level surface.

5. Handover and aftercare

You get guidance on simple day-to-day care, and we can carry out inspections and maintenance to keep the space safe and compliant.

Working on a school site

Our whole team is fully background checked, including enhanced DBS, and we plan work around the school day or holidays to keep disruption to a minimum.

Every project starts with a free consultation.
